The Psi Corps and President Clark's government, having uncovered Shadow vessels hidden within Earth's solar system, begin to exploit their advanced technology. As the Clark administration grows more xenophobic and authoritarian, it justifies the declaration of martial law through a military incident. This leads to a Martian independence war, as the planet has long harbored political tensions with Earth. Meanwhile, Babylon 5 and several other Earth Alliance colonies also declare independence. In response, the Earth Alliance attempts to seize Babylon 5 by force, but the Minbari, who have allied with the station to counter the rising Shadow threat, successfully repel the attack. Concerned about the Shadows' increasing influence over his people, Centauri ambassador Londo Mollari seeks to cut ties with them. However, Mr. Morden, the Shadows' human liaison, manipulates him into reinstating the partnership by orchestrating the murder of Mollari's mistress and framing a rival Centauri House. This results in open conflict between the Shadows and the alliance led by Babylon 5 and the Minbari. It is later revealed that the Vorlons' genetic manipulation is the origin of human telepathy, a discovery that proves Shadow ships are vulnerable to telepathic assaults. Frustrated by the Vorlons' inaction against the Shadows, Captain John Sheridan pressures Vorlon ambassador Kosh Naranek into launching an attack on their shared enemy. Kosh's actions ultimately lead to his assassination by the Shadows. Returning to Babylon 5, former station commander Jeffrey Sinclair enlists Captain Sheridan, Delenn, Ivanova, and Marcus to steal the Babylon 4 space station and send it 1,000 years back in time as a base for the previous Minbari-Shadow war. At the end of Season 1, Sinclair undergoes the same transformation as Delenn, becoming a Minbari and revealing himself as the true Valen from Minbari legend, not a reincarnation. Motivated by the unexpected reappearance of his presumed-dead wife, now serving the Shadows, Sheridan travels to Z'ha'dum, the Shadow homeworld, to be recruited. Instead, he destroys their largest city in a suicidal nuclear strike and is last seen leaping into a mile-deep chasm to evade the explosion. During a battle with Shadow vessels, Garibaldi mysteriously disappears.
